OAAH Late Trojan War, Amazon allies

Warning!

Real Wargaming Porn Ahead!

I'm slowly painting up figures for my Of Gods And Mortals Winter Olympics.  Good news is, that "overflows" into yet more Of Armies And Hordes armies.

Have a look at the picture above.  At about this point a chap (mid 30's, he seemed genuine) and asked "is that like bloodbowl?"  We say a cautious no.  We've never played or seen a game of bloodbowl, but feel confident-.  I guess he was trying to relate our game to his experience.  I'm reminded of a story about a "back-when" player.  He had Late Romans, 'cos Late Romans beat his mates (I think) Sassanids every time.  He wasn't sure what they were late - of, but they won.

I'm being lazy, still and not pointing these forces.  There are 10 units per side, ignoring attached skirmishers.

On that point- many of these units are 12 infantry plus attached 4 skirmishers.  For speed and ease, we moved the skirmishers with the main body, only dicing separately when acting independently.

Figures.  Trojans & novice amazons are Battle Valour.  I got some extra shields for an irregular mix.

Bulk of Amazons are from Irregular Miniatures.  I got an army pack plus the fantastic chariot.  Considering their age, the stand up well in comparison.  Again I added some shields, but with up to 7 variations per code, lots of variety!  The heavy javelin are all axe cut-down and shielded.  More to come, warband sear & sword plus a few cavalry.

These are the lists I went with, from previous games:

Achaeans.
General Odysseus 3 3 6 Sub Inspiring leader, 3 lives

Heroes 4 3 6 Slow
Javelin 5 1 4 Shooter 1

12 Spear 4 2 5 Pikes Slow
4 Archers 4 1 5 Shoot 2 Skirmishers

12 Spear 4 2 5 Shoot1
4 Archers 4 1 5 Shoot 2 Skirmishers

Light chariots level 2, 3,2 5, Fast, Skirmishers Shooters 1

Prince of Minos the Taurus 3 2 3, General, Chariot L3, Resilient, 3 extra lives

Cretan city state javelin 4 1 4 shooters0

Cretan archers 4 1 4 shooters 2

Bronze Bull 4 3 7 Artificial, Monster level 2, Tough, Trample, Devastating charge.

Bronze Men 4 2 6 Pikes, Slow, Artificial, Drilled (not used)

Trojans

12 Spear 4 2 5
4 Archers 4 1 5 Shoot 2 Skirmishers

Archers 4 1 5 Shoot 2

Javelin 4 2 4 Shooter 1

Amazons

Chariot 3, 3 3 5 General, Shoot2, 3 lives. Army standard.

Axe 3 3 5 Slow, Drilled.

Spear 4 2 5 Shoot1

Archers 4 2 5 Shoot2

Skirmishing archers & javelin 4 1 5 Shoot1

Light chariots level 2, 3 2 5 Fast, Trample

Light cavalry 4 2 5, Mounted, Fast, Shoot1 (not used)

The Game.  Tony was (for once, coming straight from work and having to get into gaming mode), slow on the picy taking front.  I'd set up the table, rolling a dice per square.  Each 6 was a rough patch.  Armies at this time chose an open area and this reproduces that quite well.  I'd looked for a "run" with the intention of adding a river, but it didn't happen.

I had to scramble for bases, so ended up using some of the Mars ones from last week.  The problems of transporting!

Tony took the Amazon/Trojans.  I got a nice line then the heavy javelin threatened to mix it.

Trojans safe from my chariots in the rough.

Colourful lot, aren't they?

Implaca - bull.

This should not be allowed!

What?  Oh yes, heavy axe smash into my pike doing a lot of damage.

Bull bites Trojan archers, gets bit back!

Pike have a go, but get shot up - and lose!

My chariots need some attention-.

Last of the red hot axe wielding muvvers get taken out by skirmishers.

Chariots mash into side of archers - and come off worse!  These are punching above their weight!

Odysseus tries his heroic mettle, does well but they're still going!

Cretans crash into Trojan spear but come off worse.  The advantage of separate shields. I used 3 main types and a few singles to give a good "not quite regular" look.

Heavy javelins go in, spank the similarly armed Achaeans.  These are mostly cut-down polearms with added shields.  Next door is their younger sisters in their "school" uniform.

Amazonian chariots finally move.

Odysseus tries his luck.  Brave man.

Gets got!

Now it's the turn of the Taurus Prince of Minos - who gets swamped.

Dead bull!

Game 2.  Yep, that one done in 2 hours, so time for more coffee & another swapsies!  Length is good, but you don't want too much depth if you've got mostly infantry units.

Javelins get stuck in.

Young ladies seeking the head of an enemy.  What's not to like?

They get shoved.

Pike plow into skirmishers.

Then the chariots get the point-.

Should be a disordered marker having taken casualties from chariots.

Moot point when the Trojan spear slams into their flank - but they put up a good fight!  Note their skirmishers behind.

Love it, looks like a proper battle!

Now where are those chariots going to go?

Ignoring the lghts on their flank, the chariots threaten the front.

Axe crash into the command.

Splitting the combatants- everyone fights!

In go the javelins!  Kill the general with javelins then the rest in combat.

That causes a morale effect in the troops under his control-.

Pike trounce young ladies, the cads!

That's a big gap-.

I start to sweep the board, denying ground.

Chariots hit spear, do well but bounce.

Heavy javelin move in on pike.

Here's how it works.  javelins & pike roll 1 dice each,  there's not a lot of armour- jav's roll red needing 3+.  1 failure, so that's 10 kills out of 11!  Pike need 2 or more, rolling all 10 hits.  That leaves 1 javelin.  2 or more is a viable unit, so both evaporate.

 Achaean's start to reform.

"Excuse me, coming through!"  Diagonal moves are open to discussion.  In this case, prompted by a general we considered that the chariots would get out of the way but the pike would not do a flank attack.

The archers get to shoot - and do spectacular, breaking the charge!  They lose half in combat but have broken Odysseus's pike!

Seeking to emulate that success, the Cretan archers charge a depleted Trojan spear and do well.

Trojan javelin are the best light infantry on the field and polish off the archers.  Note that these are a lot less colourful than their Amazon sisters!

Trojan spear should have won - attacking a smaller unit on the flank, but they get trounced!

Oddyseus is charged by the Trojan javelin.  They shoot the bleep out of him and its game over!

So we can do a 10-unit (ish) game in 2 hours!

  1. Looks fabulous, great report.
I like these movement templates, where did you get those?

In a sense it's like Blood Bowl in this that they both are miniature games and require rules to play 😁.

Happy New Year and best wishes for 2020!
